Climbing in Mexico

Most of us know Mexico for the all-inclusive resorts, the beach, Cancun and Playa del Carmen but if you go West, closer to Mexico city, there's also a mountainous region offering some great volcano climbing.

Among other peaks, the 2 most popular peaks are  Iztaccihuatl and Pico de Orizaba, highest peak of Mexico. Most guiding company offers a trip to both volcanoes. It's a great trip to practice glacier technique, high altitude and enjoy the climb as it's difficult but not a strenuous climb if you are in good shape.

I climbed Izta and Orizaba with International mountain guides in 2014. We didn't summit Izta because of really bad weather but we had a perfect sunny day on Orizaba

 Iztaccihuatl

located 50 miles southeast of Mexico City. At 5,260m this extinct volcano is Mexico's third highest mountain. Great climb of mix hiking and glacier travelling to reach the summit - if you get good weather

Nevado de Toluca and La Malinche

At 4691m and 4462m, those 2 volcanoes serve has  great acclimatization hike offering nice views and relatively easy hike.

Pico de Orizaba

Orizaba is the highest peak in Mexico and the highest volcano in North America at 5636m. A perfect snow-covered cone with a summit with crater shape of about 300m depth offering an impressive view on the surroundings mountain. Team usually rope up for security reason as it gets pretty steep towards the summit

Popocatepetl

At 5,426m this active volcano is Mexico's second highest mountain. You can't climb this volcano anymore as it's active and too dangerous to climb but you can get some really nice pictures of the volcano while climbing Izta
